No Shortcuts
There are no laws in the UK governing who can set up as a removal business. Because of the lack of legal restrictions, the removal industry attracts a number of rogues or inexperienced, untrained amateurs that may try and tempt you with cheap prices and make promises they can’t keep.
Taking shortcuts when planning the most important part of the moving process, the actual move itself, can end up causing you a lot of unnecessary stress and a lot more money than you bargained for!

Our strong advice is to better protect yourself by following the 5 Golden Rules listed below:
1
Choose a remover with a commitment to consumer protection!
Always ask your remover what consumer protection measures they adhere to.
Remember Guild members subscribe to the following measures:
- Membership of The Removals Industry Ombudsman Scheme (RIOS)
- Continual Quality Monitoring
- A Code of Practice that prioritises customers’ interests
- RIOS approved inspection including insurance verification and financial checks
- Terms and Conditions that have been verified as fair by ‘The Removals Industry Ombudsman’
To validate your removers Guild and RIOS membership, use the search feature on this website or email info@ngrs.co.uk.
If your remover is not a Guild member, always ask to see written proof of any credentials they claim!
2
Never choose a remover just because they have quoted a low price
The removals industry has been known to attract many ‘man and van’ type amateurs that operate in the black economy with untrained staff and illegal vehicles. That’s why some prices often appear so incredibly low!
3
Never take it for granted that a remover with a professional looking website is reputable or competent?
Remember the old saying ‘all that glistens isn’t gold’!
4
Ask for written verification of any service promises made by a remover.
Always ask questions if you are unsure of what’s being promised.
5
Always ensure that your removals price and your remover’s terms of business, their contractual obligations towards you, are confirmed in writing.
Always ensure that your removal price and your remover’s terms of business (their contractual obligations toward you) are confirmed in writing.
